Red Russian Kale:
Red Russian kale has a mild, nutty flavor that’s slightly sweet and earthy. Enjoy raw in salads, where its delicate leaves add color and crunch. It’s also good lightly sautéed, added to soups where it wilts fast, or tossed into pastas and grain bowls without being too bitter or overpowering.
Bok Choi:
Bok choy has a mild, fresh, slightly sweet flavor with a gentle peppery bite. Similar to cabbage but more delicate. The tender leaves cook quickly, while the crisp stems add a juicy crunch. Super versatile, it shines in stir-fries, soups, noodle dishes, or simple sautés. Especially when cooked with ginger, garlic, and scallions! Bok choy can also be steamed, roasted, or lightly boiled. It even works raw in salads or slaws for a fresh, crunchy texture.
Green Daikon:
Green daikon has a sharp, peppery bite when eaten raw. It can be sliced thin for salads or grated over meats, eggs, and vegetable dishes. When cooked, it mellows out a lot, becoming softer and more neutral while soaking up whatever flavors you add. It’s great simmered in soups and broths, where the sharpness fades and the texture gets almost potato-like. It also pickles well into a tangy, slightly sweet condiment. You can also fry it, which tones down the bite and makes it crispy and savory. This is a newer variety we’re growing, so try it and let us know what you think!
Red Carrots:
Red carrots don’t differ much from orange carrots when it comes to taste. They’re mildly sweet, earthy, and crisp with a slightly deeper, richer flavor. They can be eaten raw for snacking or sliced into salads. They also work well roasted, braised, or glazed.
Washington Navel Oranges:
These Washington Navel oranges come from Blue Heron Farm in Rumsey, about 6 miles up the road from us. They’re CCOF-certified organic and will be a weekly feature in our veggie boxes for the next month or so. They have a bright, sweet citrus flavor that’s juicy and refreshing. Seedless and easy to peel, they’re great for juicing, slicing, or eating by the section. Want to add them to your next order? Order through our webstore at least 2 days before delivery!
Yellow Finn Potatoes:
Yellow Finn potatoes are beloved for their rich, buttery-sweet flavor and moist, creamy texture. Slightly sweeter than Yukon Gold, they have just enough waxiness to hold their shape while still mashing beautifully. These “flaky starch nuggets” excel in dishes where their ability to absorb flavor really shines. They’re ideal for french fries, roasting, scalloped potatoes, and potato soups. They perform equally well boiled, fried, baked, or mashed. Their firm yet tender texture also makes them a great choice for potato salads.
Broccoli:
Broccoli with the greens! The entire plant is edible, including the stalks and leaves. Broccoli has a crisp texture when raw and becomes tender when cooked, with a flavor that is slightly bitter and earthy, yet mild and nutty. Perfect for roasting, sautéing, baking, or simply steaming. Broccoli makes a delicious, nutrient-dense addition to any raw veggie platter and doubles as a cozy, roasted side when tossed with herbs and a splash of olive oil! The outside caramelizes just a bit and the core is still crunchy if you nail it right.
