1 ½ lb. Cauliflower

1 lb. Leeks

1 bu Dino Kale

1 lb Purple Daikon

1 hd Green Cabbage

1 Butterkin Squash

Box Notes:

Happy New Year! We are thrilled with the continuation of the steady rainfall. It is currently quite soggy on the farm with full puddles that are covered with a layer of ice most mornings. The watersheds are not flowing full tilt yet so this means that the soil still has space to absorb more moisture.

Oranges grown by our friends at Blue Heron Farm in Rumsey are here! We will include them in the veggie boxes for most of the winter deliveries. Their CCOF certified oranges are juicy and delicious. When squeezed, they make incredible orange juice.

Cases of organic oranges are available for order: $36 / 20lb case. Please place your order for oranges by the Monday before your delivery day by contacting csa@riverdogfarm.com

Pork Bone Broth: New in 2017!!

$10 for 32 oz.

We are pleased to offer our pork bone broth made from Riverdog Farm pastured pork bones and our certified organic carrots. Roliroti in Oakland makes the broth for us in their USDA certified kitchen. They roast the bones and carrots then cook them in water and strain the liquid broth into the 32-ounce jugs. We deliver the broth frozen to your delivery site.

Whole Chickens and Pastured Pork: Bacon, Sausage, Ham, and Pork Cuts available year round.

Please contact the farm at csa@riverdogfarm.com for pricing and to place your order. The meat orders are delivered to CSA sites frozen in a strapped cooler. The farm retrieves the empty coolers from the CSA site the week after delivery. Please take your meat order out of the cooler the day of delivery or return the cooler the following week to the CSA delivery site.

Riverdog Farm pigs and chickens are certified organic animals raised on diets of certified organic corn/soy/triticale, produce culls, alfalfa, rye grass, clover, Three Twins Ice Cream overruns, and whey from Cowgirl Creamery. The meat is not labeled organic because the processing facilities are not yet certified organic. We are working with our processors to have the facilities become certified organic so that we can label the packaged meat as certified organic.

The rain has continued over the weekend. To date this rain season, we have received about 4 inches of rain, over ¼ of our annual average rainfall. The winter crops are thriving with the rain and the farm crew feels relieved to have a break from moving aluminum irrigation pipe. We hope the rain continues at a steady pace to replenish ground water supplies and fill surface water storage.

Field Notes:

The greenhouses are full of fall goodies including: kales, chards, fennel, broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce. It is a time of seasonal transition on the farm which means quick turnover of fields from the finished crops to beautifully prepared beds for the new transplants coming out of the greenhouses. This field prep process includes: mowing the old crop down, turning in the organic matter (crop residue) with either a tractor mounted disc or rototiller, letting the plant material break down for a few days with the help of an irrigation set, then one more tractor pass to rototill and shape the beds, followed by a tractor pass to insert the transplants with our two-seeder transplanter or direct seed depending on the crop. We direct seed the beets, carrots, turnips, and winter squash.

Box Notes:

This week’s veggie box features the flavorful, last-of-the-season Fairtime peaches. This variety is a yellow-fleshed peach that is freestone meaning the flesh easily separates from the pit making it great for freezing, canning, and cobblers. The melon in your veggie box will be either a cantaloupe or an orange honeydew. September melons, along with tomatoes and peppers, tend to have the highest sugar content. There is only about a month left for purchasing canning tomatoes and pickling cucumbers. Get them while you can!

Field Notes:

We have completed the winter squash harvest. There are bins full of squash in storage waiting to go into the veggie boxes to stock your pantries during the winter months. The pepper and tomato harvests are winding down so we will continue to include these summer favorites in the veggie boxes until the first frost ends their production sometime in November. We are beginning to harvest the first of the fall crops including the fast growing Tokyo and Scarlet Queen Turnips. The turnips are delicious raw, eaten like an apple. They are also great braised, roasted, or added as a soup ingredient. The greens are wonderful too: steamed, sautéed, or braised with a dash of salt, olive oil and lemon juice or vinegar. Lettuce will be ready soon too.

We had a great time sampling tomatoes at the annual Yolo Land Trust event on Sunday September 11th. Over 400 people attended to taste the delicious food and farm produce samples prepared by chefs from the Sacramento/Davis and Bay Area regions. This annual event raises funds to preserve agricultural land with conservation easements in Yolo County. Thank you Yolo Land Trust for bringing together farmers, wineries, eaters and chefs under the canopy of a walnut orchard to celebrate the rich agricultural bounty of this region!

The greenhouses are full of fall and winter transplants: fennel, lettuce, kale, chard, broccoli, and cabbage. Some of the starts have already been transplanted; later plantings will soon go into the ground. We also recently planted garlic cloves for the spring and summer garlic crop. Fall potato plants are about 6 inches tall and will be harvested in late November. We do two potato plantings each year, one in March and one in August.
